Isn't it rewarding to have a style of your very own? To have other's compliment you on your fashion "find"? Why not take it a step further and adorn yourself with a product that no one else can duplicate. That product that I'm speaking of is your very own Custom Made Handbag!

Over in My Etsy Shop, I have two listings that will allow you to pick from my wealth of gorgeous, high-end Designer fabric inventory. Most of my fabrics retail from a price point to $30 to $150 per yard. They are of very, very nice quality and the workman ship is timeless, allowing you to carry your custom made bag for years to come. Here is how the process works:

You let me know what fabric colors interest you. You can also let me know your pattern interest and/or the ones to avoid, ie: polka dots, flowers, stripes, etc.
I will select fabrics from my inventory, scan them, and set-up a private album for you. You will be sent an invitation to view this album. It is a private album, but you will be able to share it with whoever you wish. Sometimes a girl needs a second, or third opinion. See example below..

3. This is the process of eliminating any unwanted fabrics and introducing new fabrics along with the selected fabrics..

I present to you the most Fabulous Vintage find (for me) to date.

Hand Beaded Vintage Disco Ball

To call it a "Disco Ball" is so faux pas to me. So I would like for this magnificent piece to be referred to as a structure of sorts. It was definitely used for entertainment purposes, that's for sure. Who knows what room or hall's guest this pieces has gracefully charmed? Carefully placed, hand-bead silver paillettes, all on a 75" round diameter.

There are really no words to describe this, but It is so Old Hollywood Glamour.

Imagine how long it may have taken to hand-bead this. Also imagine the glamour crowd of spectators, down below.

Mystery Tribal Print Dress on Fashion Hunters

After my very first ever viewing of "Fashion Hunters" on Bravo last night, I knew I would not be complete unless I personally solved the problem of the mystery tribal print dress that was (almost) featured in the episode "Mystery Dresses". Allow me to set the scene..

A young lady walks into a High-end New York City consignment shop, hoping to consign her "designer" dresses in return for some high-end money. Well, like any consignment shop seeking designer duds, one must be able to verify that it is, in fact, legitimately designer labeled merchandise. Unfortunately, the potential consignee was unable to prove that her dresses were made by who she swore by. Without proof (by label) of the Designer goods, the consignment shop would not be able to convince a potential buyer that the dress was in fact, an Oscar De La Renta or Carolina Herra (both names were dropped repeatedly by the consignee).

Question: Would you buy a "Designer" item without the label? I dont' think so.

So, they offered to have the dresses in question, authenticated by a Celebrity Fashion Stylist, to see if they were "real" goods or not. There was one dress in particular that stood out to me because of the Tribal craze going on now and the very abstract print alone. I have worked with similar and immediately recognized it as a past Designer dress that was featured in one of my industry magazines a couple years back. Low and behold, after a little research this morning, I found who it was made by and when. And can you believe it?.. it is in fact an Oscar De La Renta dress from his Spring 2008, Ready-To-Wear line! Now, whether the consignee's dress is real or not, the world may never know. Personally, (having lived in NYC, studied Fashion and worked in the heart of the garment district), I feel that it was probably a Sample cut. A Sample is made for many reasons other than being sold, so no label is necessary. And if you're business savvy, you know why. So it cannot be resold.

I believe the dress on the right was the one featured on the show.. well, almost featured.

Case closed!

Furthermore, I have been an admire of this woven print way before Mr. Oscar's runway debut of it. I grew up admiring African Mudcloth as a child. When it was featured in Oscar De La Renta's collection (and others), I was immediately hooked. When I was finally able to acquire and work with this sought after textile myself, I knew it would make a beautiful handbag.. or two.

We all make mistakes, right?

Well, I don't know about you, but my mistakes are never intentional. I've had more than a few handbag errors in MissPrettyPerfect's history of designing and making handbags. But I have never had the opportunity to introduce the handbag to the public because of minor flaws that occurred during construction. Sometimes it's more work to take it apart than it is to complete it. Recently, my concerns of hanging on to a fully functional handbag with flaws were addressed in the Etsy Forums. I was encourage by some fellow Etsy sellers to open an "Oops" category. What a great idea!

I would like to extend a welcome to those of you who don't mind an occasional flaw here and there.. especially if there is a healthy discount involved. So without further ado, here are my first listings in the "Oops" category of my Etsy Shop.

I have so many unfinished projects that I had great intentions on finishing, but perhaps had a change of heart. And this happens most of the time to me.

Reporting Live From Our Hotel Room... We're Homeless.

We didn't see it coming..

There was a fire next door to us on this past Friday afternoon. I was at work and my guys had just left the scene before they knew it was beginning. While they were out and about, my husband received a call from a relative in Florida stating that the house was on fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt!

Unfortunately, the apartment has been deemed uninhabitable until further notice. There is no electricity or water in the house at this time. But thank God we have resources. We are living in a surprisingly nice hotel in Brooklyn until further notice. That further notice may be ending by the end of the week, if I have it my way. I'm just envisioning our new (my dream) apartment now. Huge windows with natural sunlight, beautiful hardwood floors and plenty of space for us to enjoy :) And my new MPP Studio would be a delight!

We ask for your prayers for our family's relocation. Pray that it be speedy and that the location be exactly what we need. Here's a positive.. I'm getting some really good use out of my travel bags, Miss Rebecca Travel Work Bag and Dr. Quinn Overnight Bag. As a Designer/ Product Developer, it's good to test market your merchandise before it's sold. This way I know for sure that the handbags that I design and make are built for the trials of life!

One door closes, another one opens.

And one final note.. I would not be true to the name MissPrettyPerfect if I didn't let you further know what all MissPrettyPerfect stands for in my mind. And this currently situation is just another testimony to share with you, and not to mention, a Perfect example. It's all about creating a positive and perfect surrounding, even though in reality, that is not exactly the case. The name MissPrettyPerfect represents strength and an ability to Know that everything is going to be alright regardless the outcome (Faith). We may not live in a Perfect world, but we have the ability to make it one for ourselves and our families.

Long Fashion Hiatus, But I Never Left The Handbags!

Where to start.. where to start!

Since my relocation back to New York City in June of this year, things have been totally non-stop in "A Typical Day In The Life of a Handbag Designer". It's a good non-stop, but very demanding. If you've ever visited or lived in the city, then you are familiar with the phrase, "Where did the time go?" This place is Amazing in so many ways. But yet, so time consuming to be a part of.

I probably took about a good 4 months to fully adjust to my new life here, in Brooklyn. My workspace/studio is located in a basement where it's kind of dark, compared to what I'm used to. I love natural sunlight, especially when photographing my handmade goods, so I've been slack in photographing my handmade handbags for everyone to enjoy. But hopefully, I'll figure out a great location for future shots.

Oh, I have a volunteer assistant now and his name is Bryson, my 5 year old. The first time he "threaded" my machine, he had my help. This was his second time threading it and he did it (almost perfect) by himself! Of course I stopped him once he got to the actual needle because of common sense. But he is already aware of that particular area of the machine since he was 3! He knows to be extra careful to not be in that area. He just loves to help!

Thank you in advance, for your concern. But Bryson does not interact with the sewing process, or the needle, or the presser foot.. because he can't reach it yet :D He is in no danger because Mommy is always present, aware and fully alert!

Hmm, what else.. OH! About a month ago, I walked in to visit a highly popular Midtown Fabric store, and walked out with a position. "Thank you Mood"! OMG. Beau-ti-ful Fabrics Galore!! If you have never visited this wonderful fabric store before, do your research first. Know almost exactly what fabric you're looking for and be able to describe what it will be used for it you don't know the name. The Sales staff is Very helpful but we can't read your minds. hehe. It can also be quite overwhelming to a first timer too! Three floors of awesomeness from wool suiting, cashmere, spandex, sweater knits, and even St. John-esque wovens all on the top floor. Fancy lace, sequined fabric, brocades, metallics, cotton shirting, poplin, jersey knits, poly's, buttons, buckles, studs, trims all on the second floor. And finally, upholstery fabrics upon decor fabrics, tassels, beaded trim, embroidered dupioni silks, chenille, canvas, linen, vinyl, leather and fur are all on the bottom level. This place is a gold mind so be prepared to stay a couple of hours.

Oh, and those of you who are tracking my progress on the Vogue 1174, I should have been finished months ago. But because I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, I just have a hard time completing what I started when it's not going in the direction that I believed it should have gone. I will be posting specifically on the completion and end result of my version of Vogue 1174.

I'm also still helping others to make their own dream of having a handbag design company of their very own! Help! I Need To Repair The Tear In My Favorite Pair Of Denim Jeans!

How many pairs of Designer denim jeans do you have in the back of your closet that you can't stand to part with just because of a simple little tear that you planned on repairing.. some day?

My favorite pair of Designer denim jeans (Armani) is almost like a love story. I Love these jeans! So comfortable, so versatile, and so cute that I can't stand to part with them just because of a tear that keeps spreading. And a tear that has spread just enough to give a show of skin for unwanted attention.. if you know what I mean. I am not going to pair up my torn denim jeans with a pair of cute boxers, just to show them off. It's just not my style. And who wants to continue to cover their assests for no unneccessary reason?

Remember the "twist" I was referring to earlier? Here's my sketched plan of action. I put the MPP twist on this beauty!

I do not plan to alter the top half of the original, but that may change in the first fitting I give myself. *interrupting my own conversation* ..and that's the thing with being creative. You don't know how to turn the creativity off. And that's a good thing because it keeps my mind busy. lol!

The bottom half, skirt part will be shortened and fitted. About 3 or 4 ruffled layers will be added and promise to float in the Seaport breeze. And a wide belted tie waist for extra dramatic effect.

So excited to see the finished product!

I'm starting with my first dress.

Because I'm still not totally confident in my patternmaking skills I learned at both North Carolina A & T State University and Parsons School of Design, I am going to start with a commercial pattern.

The 1st pattern project will be a Vogue 1174.

I love this dress! Its classic, its sexy, its sophisticated, its girly, and when I put my twist on it, it'll be MissPrettyperfect! Vogue described this sheath as, "close-fitting, strapless, lined dress has seam details, piping trim, princess seams, foundation with boning, side front pockets, pleats and darts, above mid-knee length". My predicted twist (alterations) will be to add a sort of exposed ruffled petticoat.

A Dream Come True

Excuse me for yelling, but..

We Moved To NEW YORK CITY!!

I could not keep you waiting any longer. If you're familiar with my bio, then you can totally understand what this move means to me and my family. Every since my first trip to New York City in 1992, accompanied by my dear mother Courtrina, I have always kept NYC in my heart.

I really do love this place.

I moved to New York for school back in 2001. It just so happened that 9-11 happened two weeks later. Did I go, or did I stay? It's obvious what family wanted me to do but I chose to follow my heart. I stayed and graduated from Parson School of Design a year (and one summer course), got married and had a baby, all in the course of 5 years. As I tried to adjust back to home life in North Carolina, I always felt as if a big part of me was missing.

Back in August of 2001, I arrived to New York with a dream in mind. My dream (then) was to graduate from Parsons and obtain a position in Fashion Design. After graduating from Parsons, I landed a sewing position for a private label handbag designer, E.D.E. This sewing position.. ahem.. the Seamstress position taught me a wealth of skills. Some taught skills, but mostly natural skills it seems. Being taught to sew at the age of 5 by my mother was when the sewing seed was sewn.

Slightly acknowledging the gift, I didn't realize how talented I really was. A lot of words of encouragement came from family, church members, friends and admirers. Believe me, I am as humble as they come, so to speak of myself, to other's as being talented, still sort of makes me shy away. I really can't take credit for any of it because of The method behind all of my creations. My process is this: Just sit down, and create. I use what I have and don't dwell on what I wish I had.

So, onward and forward! I have all of my machines in place and the New York City Garment District in my back yard!

Introducing Miss Lotti Oversized Leather Tote Bag

I am so happy this turned out to be a wonderful creation of a handmade handbag. Because I have to admit that once I got started on constructing this bag, I wasn't so sure of myself.

Miss Lotti was definitely a work in progress that took me 3 days to complete. Like all of my designs, I had an idea in my mind and it had to come to life asap.

So without further ado, say 'hello' to the newest addition to the MPP family.. Miss Lotti

The fabrics are high quality upholstery fabrics such as wovens, embroidery, chenille, and silk fabrics. And if you will direct your attention to the iridescent peach color 'wave' patterned silk.. I manipulated this silk into Mexican Pleating. If you missed my tutorial on Mexican Pleating, please watch the video and see me sew my heart away!

Leather drawstring sides and a separating zipper to revile the wide mouth opening. These features help to really see all that is inside the bag.

The interior back side has a zippered closure. On the opposite side is a divided pocket.

Getting A Hustle On In The Front Yard!

Today my 4 year old son and I went to the mall to hang out and see what was new in town. I took a back road to return home and stumbled upon this ..

This person has made there front yard a retail space! I'm not making fun or judging this person at all. The message is very simple and should be clear.

Use what you got!

This handmade artist may not sell on Etsy, Artfire or online at all. And she probably doesn't set up at craft shows. She doesn't have to! The front yard is Perfect!

Now go and do "that thing" and Quit making excuses!

Mexican Pleating Tutorial by MissPrettyPerfect

A couple of years ago when I 'discovered' this technique, I thought it was the greatest thing I ever thought of, until I saw it in a sewing book. I wasn't disappointed to learn that I wasn't the first to ever try this, but more like relieved that the pressure of announcing a new technique to the world, would not be on my shoulders :D

Supply List:

Fabric

Chalk Wheel

Ruler

Scissors

Pins (optional)

Rotary Cutter & Mat (optional)

Instructions:

Mark lines in 1 1/4" increments using a chalk wheel marker and ruler. Be sure that the lines are exactly spaced, each time.

Now you're ready to sew and pleat your fabric. Fold on each line and sew at 1/4" on each fold. Press the pleats going all in the same direction.

After the folds have been pressed in the same direction, turn the fabric and mark line placement at a minimum spacing of 1" each. Once the markings are drawn, you will be able to follow along that same line as your sewing line, alternating the pleats in 2 different directions.

Sew 'down' the flat pleat sewing line first. Turn the fabric and sew 'up', flipping the pleats and creating the 'wave' look. Try to keep the sewing lines as straight as possible.

Once you've completed this process, your piece should look like this..

This Etsy Shop owner works very hard. As a SAHM (stay at home mom) of two lovies and a husband, dog, cat, and a fishes *phew*, you can only imagine why it was important for Elizabeth to name her shop ParadisePurls. She found her 'paradise' in her love of knitting and creating beautiful jewelry!

African Mudcloth Cutting Session Today

I have always, always been an admirer of African Mudcloth. It is a traditional fabric of Africa that is absolutely rich with history. The many, many symbols, colors, and even the handmade technique is well respected among other nationalities and collected by many as an art. Today you will most commonly see it in Home Decor or as a garment, which was the initial purpose of this well sought-after fabric.

The pictures showcased here are of the two that I am cutting (yes cutting) today! I had these stored away and was debating on when and if I was going to actually convert these wonderful pieces into handbags. Well, I finally got the guts on this morning. All I keep saying to myself in my head is, "Waste not, want not". There is absolutely NO room for error. I cannot afford to make any mistakes.. period.

And in case you're wondering what will become of these fabulous traditional African Mudcloth panels, I

am creating a couple of Dr. Quinn Travel Bags (long overdue), Miss Amelia Overnight bags, and Miss Alea gathered hobo handbags! Please keep me in your prayers ;-)

Now, if you love African Mudcloth as much as I do, this Smithsonian Institute (one of my favorite museums) will explain to you how this traditional fabric is made here. And if you're up to it, there is a tutorial on how you can make your very own Mudcloth! I believe it's well worth the attempt to try. If you have ever attempted before to make any fabric of your own, please share in the comment box below. We'd love to hear.

Miss Pretty Perfect's Indian Princess Blouse

What an adventure this was. And I enjoyed every moment.

MPP's Indian Princess blouse is made of traditional Indian Sari/Saree Fabrics. I have always admired the traditional garments of Indian women. And today, I introduce the Miss Pretty Perfect version. Sari fabrics are usually highly detailed with beading and embroidery, mostly done by hand. Beautiful hand work that is very hard to come across being that mostly machines are doing the work for us today.

The Sari pieces were sewn together and matched with coordinating satin fabric. The top bodice part consist of all Sari pieces. The double peplum is made of satin while the entire garment is lined in silk.

This is so Miss Pretty Perfect and so my style. Enjoy!

Once Upon A Time, Barbie Was My Friend.

Just like every other little girl, I played with Barbie dolls. I took it a little more serious as a teenager by collection her. I collected every African-American Barbie doll made. The first African-American Barbie was introduced in 1969. She had an afro. Barbie meant a lot to all of us girls. She gave us the ability to be someone else in our minds. Maybe she gave us the outlet to dream our way out of situations, simply by changing her clothes. And boy did she have a wardrobe! That's what always got me so excited.. her clothes! I gained a love for the her vintage wardrobe more than anything else. Just the idea of pearl necklaces and earrings sets, gloves, and after 7 attire. Oh my, I'm getting excited all over again.

Barbie may even be the reason I enjoyed clothing so much and why I chose a career in Fashion. There was a joy about her clothing, let alone she was a women who could be anyone she wanted to be!

My bracelet arrived from Thailand today. I love it! Now this is an adornment that I could own in every color. It's a handmade creation of beads in flower formation, wired on an adjustable cuff. The Rebecca bag features Pockets Galore. A total of 14 pockets! Seven pockets on the outside and 7 pockets on the inside. All pockets are lined, some closing with a zipper and some with a heavy duty metal snap. A double shoulder strap that allows to carry Rebecca as a tote or carry as a shoulder bag. And in addition, a removable across-the-body strap for hands free movement.

And another One... This LV was very much used and put to good use. I chopped off about 1/3 of it and replaced the shoulder straps. The gold studs are an added bonus. Looks Good. It's definitely a One-Of-A-Kind.

Well MPP has done it again! A young lady in California requested a diaper bag that held her whole house! Well, not quite the entire house but almost. She has a now six month old and she is also a working woman. Her main request was to have a larger sized diaper bag that could hold alot more than the one's she bought previously. And also not only to hold her child's items, but also her items needed for work. So, we got together on details and val la!, we have her brand new, all leather, custom made diaper/work bag with pockets galore!
